At the time of the 1910 census, he was paying a mortgage to own his farm in Mills County, Texas. When John registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sep 1918, he was farming in Star, Mills County, Texas. Isabell Jane Witty was his nearest relative. By the time of the 1920 and 1930 census, he owned his farm free of mortgage.

His last residence was a farm in the Naruna Section of Lampasas, Burnet County, Texas. His death certificate showed his occupation as farmer and rancher. The informant was Mrs. A. V. Clary.

John married Isabell Jane Patterson, daughter of Kenneth A. Patterson and Sarah Pierce. (Isabell Jane Patterson was born about 1877 and died on 7 Jan 1941 in , Lampasas County, Texas.)

John next married Mary Catherine Geeslin, daughter of Elias Monroe Geeslin and Margarett Isabel Head. (Mary Catherine Geeslin was born on 12 Dec 1890 in Center City, Mills County, Texas,¹⁰ died on 13 Jun 1958 in Temple, Bell County, Texas ¹⁰ and was buried in Hurst Ranch Cemetery, Hamilton County, Texas ¹⁰.). The cause of her death was multiple cerebra thrombosis due to hypertensive cardiovascular disease and generalized arteriosclerosis.⁹
