Leslie's father, George R. Lingle, was born in Missouri, his mother, Ella Withers, in Kentucky. At the time of the 1910 census, Leslie was a clerk in a drug store. He and Ella lived in a multifamily home along with her brother Samuel's family in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. When Leslie registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sep 1918, he was self employed as a feed and seed merchant in Clinton, Henry County, Missouri. His wife, Ella, was his nearest relative. At the time of the 1920 and 1930 census, he was a retail merchant of seeds and feed. He owned his home in Clinton, Henry County, Missouri, free of mortgage. It was valued at $3000 in 1930. His wife, Ella, was the informant on his death certificate.

Leslie married Ella Virginia Brosius, daughter of Jeremiah B. Brosius and Sarah Espa Brosius, on 30 Jun 1909 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri.¹ (Ella Virginia Brosius was born on 14 Jun 1889 in Prairie Home, Cooper County, Missouri,^{1 8 9} died on 6 May 1955 in Clinton, Henry County, Missouri ⁹ and was buried on 9 May 1955 in Englewood Cemetery, Clinton, Henry County, Missouri ⁹.). The cause of her death was acute circulatory failure due to coronary thrombosis with myocardial infarction and arteriosclerosis.⁶
