At the time of the 1910 census, James was a retail merchant in the monument business. He owned his home in Trenton, Grundy County, Missouri, free of mortgage. A servant, Kitty Curtis, 14, was part of the household. When he registered for the WWI draft on 12 Sep 1918, he was general manager of Central Missouri Monument Company in Boonville, Cooper County, Missouri. His wife, Eulah Mae, was his nearest relative. The family was listed in Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri, in 1920. James was a merchant of tombstones. He was listed in Chillicothe again on the 1930 census. He was a salesman of monuments. He owned his home, valued at $5000. Eulah Merrifield was the informant on his death certificate.
