Bluford's parents were William M. Buckner, born in Tennessee, and Lucy Dorcas "Dicy" Cornelius, born in Alabama. At the time of the 1860 census, the family lived in Summit (post office), Blount County, Alabama, where his father farmed. His siblings were Mary, Lucinda, John C. Stephen, Eliza, Nancy, and Columbus. His mother and the children were living with W. Cornelius in Blountsville (post office), Blount County, Alabama, at the time of the 1870 census. At the time of the 1880 census, he was a farmer in Blountsville, Blount County, Alabama. His brother Columbus Buckner was a laborer on his farm and lived with them. Also, his mother in law Margaret Murphree was part of the household.
